Direct Petition to Minnesota Board of Teaching
The direct petition process is a way for experienced teachers who have continued their professional development in adult basic education through workshops, inservices, conferences, and self-study can obtain an ABE license endorsement. This process allows individuals to make a case that these experiences are equivalent to the coursework of a university program and meet the subject area standards for adult basic education teachers as delineated by the Minnesota Board of Teaching.
The process described on these web pages relates specifically to teachers in Minnesota adult basic education programs who currently hold a K-12 license and who wish to have an ABE endorsement attached to their current license. The University of Minnesota offers a program for both the ABE endorsement and for a stand-alone ABE license. For information on this option, contact University of Minnesota, Adult Education.
The process:
· The Minnesota Department of Education, Licensing Section, has guidelines for the process. These guidelines are available at their web site Licensure Via Portfolio. As the guidelines are very prescriptive, it is important to read them before you begin.
· Gather information about any workshops, conferences, inservices, classes, self-study, curriculum development, and program development that you have attended or participated in.
· Correlate the above activities to the Subject Area Standards for Teachers of Adult Basic Education (Minnesota Rule 8710.4000 subpart 3a-i). A correlating grid that matches the submission guidelines is available at the MDE web site Licensure Via Portfolio.
